Munchausen by proxy: how to detect the simulation of diseases?

It’s hard to believe, but there are people who do not hurt, and feign illness, and very different plan. We are talking about a mental disorder called “Munchausen syndrome”.

What is Munchausen syndrome?


called a mental disorder in which a person exaggerates, artificially causing yourself or just faking the symptoms of various diseases. The purpose of the simulation – medical assistance in various forms (examination, hospitalization or even surgery). The disorder was first described in 1951, the Englishman Richard Asher and his name it received in honor of all the famous liar Baron Munchausen who lived in the XVIII century on the territory of modern Germany.

Why are people faking illness? Psychologists say that all this is because of the shortage of attention to his person. People are in urgent need of care, sympathy to themselves, not getting it from others and starts to simulate. Usually, Munchausen syndrome is the result of children’s complexes, when the child did not get love and affection. If the kid gets attention from adults only during his illness, he begins to think that the only way to surround yourself with care. And a similar pattern of behavior carries over into adult life.

People suffering from Munchausen’s syndrome, have such features of character:

  • self-centeredness;
  • melancholic;
  • inclined to silence;
  • falsity;
  • temper;
  • aggressiveness;
  • hysteria;
  • problems with socialization, communicating with other people;
  • a tendency to masochism.

Patients according to mental disorder and a keen interest in the medical literature, although doctors are not. Women are hysterical, men – aggressiveness. If Munchausen syndrome is established, the patient will be the last to deny its existence and accuse doctors of incompetence. Usually it will have a huge list of requests for medical assistance for a variety of reasons.

Delegated Munchausen syndrome

There is another kind of Munchausen – delegated. We are talking about the fact that parents fabricate symptoms of illness in a child to seek medical assistance for him. It’s a terrible form of the disorder, when suffering of an innocent child.

The baby negligent parent may induce bleeding, cramps, vomiting, drowsiness, diarrhea, and then selflessly to save him and to call upon the help of doctors.

More often it is the mother feigns illness symptoms in a child. This is a woman who is unhappy in the marriage or brings up a child alone, suffers from attention deficit disorder, is a mental disorder, had a difficult childhood. Sometimes, delegated Munchausen’s suffering nurse, then risk her patients. She saves the life of the patient, and then takes pleasure in appreciation for her hard work on the part of the relatives of the patient.

How to recognize the person Munchausen syndrome?

To understand that people suffering from this mental disorder, it is possible by such indicators:

  • It often hurts, but always of different diseases. The symptoms pass quickly, giving way to others.
  • Examination did not show abnormalities, but complaints remain.
  • The survey did not confirm the symptoms.
  • Doctors say that for the first time meet with such a case.
  • The symptoms indicate a very rare disease.
  • The patient is not satisfied with the results of the diagnosis requires additional investigations.
  • Standard treatment methods do not give any result.

The treatment of this disorder is very rarely successful. First, its presence is very difficult to achieve, secondly, the patient denies the existence of the syndrome and will not treat him.
